Are you pursuing financial independence so that you can spend more time with your kids?
Taylor always thought she would want to work after having a baby but that plan quickly changed once she had her daughter, Jovie. Taylor and her husband Scott realized that they didn’t have the funds so that she could stop working. Scott discovered the concept of financial independence one day when going for a walk with their baby and became inspired. He’s a documentary film maker and decided to completely uproot their life and make a documentary about their FI journey called Playing with FIRE.
You’ll love Taylor’s relatable story.

Key takeaways from our chat with Taylor from the Playing with FIRE Documentary
1 – You might change your mind when you have a kid about staying home
Taylor always thought that she would want to keep working after having kids but after she had her daughter, she completely changed her mind.
She didn’t have a financial plan in place though that allowed her to stay home. She’s now aggressively pursuing financial independence so she can spend more time with her daughter.
2 – The top 10 list is the best way to introduce a spouse to FIRE
Scott, Taylor’s husband, heard about FIRE on a podcast and was absolutely hooked. He didn’t go back home and overwhelm Taylor with the concept though (like many FIRE spouses are guilty of doing!)
He asked Taylor instead to put together a list of her Top 10 favorite things.
Scott and Taylor had been living an expensive life on the beach in Coronado and they were surprised to see that living on the beach did not make the list.
The list was full of simple things like having coffee with Scott, drinking wine, hearing her baby laugh. None of those things cost an extravagant amount of money. This approach got Taylor on board to FIRE in an incredibly thoughtful and not overwhelming way.
3 – It’s OK to not be perfect every month
Taylor and Scott’s savings rate is at 70% but last month it was at 30% because of a natural disaster. They can’t beat themselves up too much on the path to FIRE since it’s a 10 year journey for them.
They’re in it for the long haul and will not do a short term sprint.
