Key takeaways from our chat with Diego Corzo
1 – Be RESOURCEFUL
Diego volunteered at a non-profit in college to develop tech skills and did such an amazing job they offered him a position. When Diego asked his parents about his work authorization however, he quickly found out that since he was a dreamer, he didn’t have it. Diego was still determined to work despite this obstacle. He researched and found out that if he started an LLC, the nonprofit could pay the LLC and he could still work for them. He recommends not giving up and being resourceful to get what you want.
2 – It is up to YOU to find your path
Diego’s dad gave him advice when he moved to the States that America is the land of opportunity. Diego has since taken that mentality and applied it in his life. He buddied up with a friend in University and split the cost of books and other supplies. He also made study guides for classes and sold them to other students to pay for the cost of the class. He worked his butt to get through school since he couldn’t take out student loans because of his dreamer status.
3 – You can get into real estate without qualifying for loans
Diego read Rich Dad Poor Dad and was inspired to get into real estate. He didn’t qualify for home loans so he convinced his Dad to go 50/50 on a $60,000 property in Florida, which they paid for in cash. He then convinced his buddies to go in on a house-hack in Texas where he lived. Diego wasn’t on the loan so he paid his friends under the table. He qualified for his first property at age 24. Diego is now 27 years old with 8 properties. He wants to own 10 this year and have $10,000 in passive income per month.
4 – Take the leap for entrepreneurship
Diego’s family in Peru was super proud of his job at General Motors and it was hard for him to disappoint them by leaving his job. They were supportive of him though. He knew that it was time for him to try entrepreneurship and he left his job on good terms so he could always come back.
5 – Market the home on Craigslist before you close on a property
Diego is a realtor and was able to show the property he was buying to Craigslist roommates before he even closed on the house. He couldn’t sign a lease for the property per the law but he was able to get roommates in on Day 1 which helped him be profitable on the house right away.
6 – Support Dreamers!
Diego is a huge advocate for Dreamers, and has been more vocal lately with the political climate and uncertainty around DACA. He is super successful, pays his taxes, and employs an American citizen. Diego now wants to share his story and help inspire dreamers and all millennials achieve financial freedom.
