Key takeaways from our chat with Evita Robinson
1 – If you have an opportunity to travel, TAKE IT
Evita had just been fired from her freelance job in New York under some shady circumstances, when her friend suggested that she teach in Japan.
She decided to jump on the opportunity and got the job. With almost no time to think about it, she was on a plane headed there to teach.
When she got there, she looked around and didn’t see many other travelers who looked like her. The culture was also very different from what she was used to in the United States.
It ended up being a life-changing opportunity for her though and the start of the Nomadness web series.
2 – You don’t have to be rich to travel
It’s all about putting the money you do have to work.
Evita created a keynote presentation to help people realize that it’s not as expensive to travel as they might think.
With sites like Skyscanner, people can snag cheap flights, and with the abundance of hostels and Airbnb, it’s easy to find somewhere to stay for cheap.
Don’t let money fears stop you from seeing the world.
3 – You can create something amazing without money
Evita knew she wanted to grow the Nomadness community but didn’t have the capital to kick it off.
- So she made a kickstarter
- And raised $26,000 in a month for a cross-country RV tour to historically black colleges
She got swag from sponsors, had a theme song made, and rolled up to these college campuses to spread awareness that travel is possible.
Evita emphasized her choice to cultivate a community versus focusing on growing a business.
The community has since grown to 17,000 members of all ages.
They host BBQs, concerts with the hottest artists, events all over the world, festivals and tons of other awesome events for the travel tribe and community.

I keep saying this, but that episode is my new favorite. What an inspiring story. I love that I hear about different people than are featured on most of the usual FI blogs/podcasts. You two are doing an incredible job.
