Key takeaways from our chat with Gwen & J (that’s us!)
1 – Small group getaways are great places to meet other financial independence seekers
Gwen and J have attended lots of conferences and meetups over the years, such as:
- The Chautauqua in Ecuador
- Camp Mustache
- FinCon
- Camp FI… (Gwen attended this one)
- Travel Blogging Exchange (J)
- Frequent Traveler University (J)
- Lola Retreat (J)
- Podcast Movement (both – coming up!)
- and others..
They have a blast meeting other people interested in financial independence, travel rewards, blogging and entrepreneurship at these events.
The reason these in-person multi-day events are so good is because it gives people an opportunity to get to know people on a deeper level than just a one-time Meetup.
At the same time, these events are expensive and you can totally make connections for free with local Facebook Meetup groups.
Gwen & J recommend the Choose FI Facebook local groups and any FIRE groups you can find on Meetup (SF has one!)
2 – Create versus join to get what you want
J used to join clubs, join sports teams, join volunteer groups. She realized after college that instead of joining things, she could better get what she wanted by creating them herself.
She felt awkward and weird putting herself out there at first and creating (like the time she created a gifted and talented program her local library and no one showed up the first session).
Learning to put herself out there was so critical though and she’s been creating for 6 years since both in her day job and entrepreneurial endeavors (blog, podcast, Etsy shop, masterminds, etc).
3 – Just ask!
Gwen isn’t afraid to ask for something even if it sounds ridiculous! She offered to do stained glass for a famous person in the craft world and didn’t hear back but it shows how willing she is to put herself out there and maybe get a YES!
In so many others cases she heard back YES and would never have gotten to where she is today without giving it a try!
I’m sensing a theme. These ladies go for what they want and fight through any doubts/hesitation/worry/fear of failure they may experience while going for it!
